Following on from yesterdays meeting with Dr Powles at St Barts, Steve was deemed fitter enough to undergo the dreaded HD IL2 treatment! Its funny really as I felt happy that he was able to take the option to do the treatment but scared and worried about the next step. I know Steve is as brave as they come but hope I am too!
So he will go in on the 10th and stay for about a week. On the first day he will have a scan to see the size and locations of the tumors so they can then use this as a comparison when he has the follow up scan done.
On the Tuesday the 11th they will start the treatment, which will go on for about a week. With the aim to give Steve 14 injections of the IL2. No one as of yet has managed to have all 14 doses as they have told the doctor to stop! So that sounds like a challenge to Steve and we know how competitive he is!! That said this is somewhat different to the golf or cricket bets which he is known for taking part in! Also it isnt entirely down to him as the doctors decide how much his body can take. And finally the end result is not necessarily linked to how many doses he take.
Reading this back it all sounds a bit complicated! Which I suppose in a way it is!
Steve will likely have side effects after each dose and until they have these under control they wont give him another dose.
After the week, he will leave and come home for a week, where he is likely to be tired! No change there!! And then he will go back into hospital on 24th August. And the treatment will repeat.
He will then need to wait for 8 weeks. Half way through that time at about 4 weeks he will have a scan where they will see if the treatment has had any impact on the tumors.
If it has then they will repeat the treatment again at the end of the 8 week gap!
And so on and so on. Until all of the little S**** have gone!
During the time in hospital he probably wont be able to have visitors but we will know more when he goes in.
Hi, wishing you well Lefty! Bucks sent me the link - good stuff! Cheers Craig
